News Category: State of the Waste Industry 2009 Survey of public attitudes and behaviours towards the environment 29 October 2009
Results from the 2009 Public attitudes and behaviours towards the environment
tracker survey were released at the end of September 2009. The survey gives
a representative picture of what people in England think, and how they behave,
across a range of issues relevant to the environment including recycling, composting
and reusing waste.
The results included the following:
- The proportion of people saying that they recycle waste has increased, compared
with two years ago, and the majority of people say they are acting to recycle;
- The proportion of respondents recycling plastic, cardboard, tins/cans and
glass through door-step collection has increased since 2007;
- 43 per cent of respondents said they were already composting household food
or garden waste. However 20 per cent had thought about doing this but had
rejected the idea; and
- 63 per cent of respondents said they did not check whether an item could
be recycled before purchasing.
