The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009
29 October 2009

The Regulations establish a legal framework and schemes for collecting, treating and recycling portable, industrial and vehicle batteries and apply to all types of batteries except when they are used for military equipment (such as arms, munitions and war material) and space equipment.

• Regulations covering collecting, recycling and reprocessing portable batteries come into force on 1 February 2010;
• Regulations banning the disposal of waste industrial batteries to landfill or by incineration come into force on 1 January 2010; and
• Regulations banning the disposal of waste automotive batteries to landfill or by incineration come into force on 1 January 2010.
o Most businesses that sell automotive batteries will take back used batteries on purchasing new ones. Producers of automotive batteries must advertise their contact details before the start of each calendar year in which they operate and a list of registered producers can be obtained from the Environment Agency.
