Area landfills seek to expand business

Northwestern Illinois has the largest amount of excess landfill capacity and some of the busiest landfills in the State. The State also taxes waste hauliers less than neighboring Wisconsin and Iowa.
So when the State of Wisconsin more than doubled the fee it charged companies to use its landfills in an effort to balance the State budget, some of the garbage and money that used to wind up in Wisconsin will now, it seems, be landfilled in Illinois.
