Recession Reduces Waste Generation

A North Carolina state report has identified that residents disposed of less solid waste in the State’s landfills in 2009 than any previous year in nearly two decades. This was mainly attributed to the economic recession, particularly the decline in the housing and construction markets. A number of other initiatives in the State, including banning certain recyclable materials from landfills and the introduction of a kerbside recycling scheme, have led to high recycling rates.
